Women with Cameras
July 24, 2011 by Colleen
We are delighted to welcome back British photojournalist Lee Karen Stow. Lee visited us last year to tell us about the Women with Cameras project in Sierra Leone. She has more stories to share, about the brave and determined women who through photography are improving their lives in that desperately poor country. Francess Ngaboh-Smart, one of the Women with Cameras members, has overcome obstacles and barriers to become a sought-after professional who uses her photographic talent to document the changes in her country. We had hoped to host Francess this summer, but she was denied a visa to visit Canada. We will have some of her work for sale.
Lee will also tell us about the amazing members of the Sierra Leone Women’s Boxing team, who are, quite literally, fighting to improve their lives and bring home the first Olympic gold medal in women’s boxing.
Tickets are $20 at the door. Join us for tea/coffee and dessert. Proceeds will go to the Women with Cameras project.
Date: Wednesday August 24, 2011
Time: 7:00 – 8:30 pm

Women of Sierra Leone
July 25, 2010 by Colleen
42 is the average life expectancy of a woman in Sierra Leone, one of the poorest nations on earth. ‘42′ is the name British photojournalist Lee Karen Stow gives to an ongoing photographic project documenting the women of Sierra Leone and their struggles to obtain a better life. Violence against women is common. One woman in eight dies in pregnancy or childbirth. Yet these women demonstrate incredible spirit, resilience, determination and desire to be part of a world of equality and opportunity.

Please join Soroptimist International of the Tri Cities as we celebrate the spirit of these remarkable women. Watch the video “A Family and a Future” about Project SIerra, a joint project between Soroptimist International and Hope and Homes for Children. Listen as Lee Karen Stow tells us about the amazing women who are part of the Wilberforce Women photography project.
We will serve dessert. Tickets are $20 at the door. Please let us know you plan to attend by emailing sitricities@soroptimist.net or calling 604-351-5866.

Multicultural pot-luck and discussion
March 27, 2010 by Colleen
As women we have much in common across cultures. We all want harmonious communities. We want to live without fear, to raise our children to become good citizens, to care for our elderly relatives. We want the opportunity to be employed in our chosen fields and recognized for our achievements.
You are invited to come together with other women from a variety of cultures to share food and ideas. We want to hear what barriers you face or have faced as a woman in Canada. Let’s discuss how we can all work together to break down those barriers.
Event: a multicultural pot-luck lunch and discussion.
Please bring some food to share.
